I’ve spent dozens of hours researching and testing dozens of smart locks and have rounded up the best of the best. How would it feel if you never had to carry a house key again? Or better yet, never again fear locking yourself out?įrom providing keyless access to your home to tracking who comes and goes, the best smart locks provide a range of features and benefits that make them the perfect security solution for any home. I'll do the front door in a couple of months, the current one is a multi point locking system so it's not compatible, we're going to get a new one after building out the porch, it's a good opportunity to do it.Art of Lock Picking is reader-supported. I'm probably going to do the gate soon myself, I've got everything ready but the gate controller itself that I still need to pick. Hope this makes sense, sorry for the wall of text. A bit silly to wire the access hub as a push button, but it'll work ! They also usually have a push button (or vehicle detection sometimes) terminals that you can wire the access hub to (this time using the hub's dry terminal, not 12v), as well as some switch or esp to get it into HA. Nice thing about the electric strike lock, besides not requiring a battery, is that it'll work with whatever lock you want so you can keep a key as a backup, in case the power is out or any other issue.Īnd for the gate same idea, except instead of the electric strike lock it's the gate controller. If you're just doing Zigbee / Z-Wave + HA you should be fine, as long as you have a sensible automation. If you go for something else just be careful about what you pick, some gate openers are vulnerable to replay attacks for example which would be awkward for a front door. I'd like the rest of the family to still be able to manage this without me, I'll pay for the nice UI. In practice the unifi access hub isn't even needed, you could just have any smart switch between the electric strike lock and a 12v power supply and you're done for very cheap, but unifi has a nice and easy UI to manage access with cards and apps. HA -> ESP32 (Push Button terminal) -> Unifi Access Hub (12v terminal) -> Electric Strike Lock (fail secure) Then it's in home assistant so you can do whatever automation you want to unlock the door. I'm thinking esphome for extra controls but a Zigbee in line switch for example would work just as well. Essentially if contact is made it'll open the door, no auth required, so you can connect whatever you want there. The access hub also has push button terminals, which is meant for a physical push button on the inside for people to get out but can be used for anything. There's cheaper solutions there, I just like unifi stuff and it's all PoE so I don't even need an electrician. They're very cheap, but fitting it might not be easyĬonnect that to an unifi access hub, which has 12v terminals and there you go, you've got a mains powered 'smart' lock, they have card readers and whatnot to control access. It's fit into the door frame so it works with pretty much any regular lock (as long as it's not a multipoint lock), and opens when 12v is supplied. An electric strike lock, despite the name, isn't actually a lock.
